Technische Universität München - TUM

The Technische Universität München (TUM) was founded in 1868 and is now one of the leading universities in Germany. It is dedicated to the ideal of a top-level research based entrepreneurial university. TUM has an outstanding international reputation and collaborates with more than 150 partner universities worldwide. It bundles the full spectrum of natural, engineering, educational, medical and life sciences, complemented by business studies. This combination of subjects is unique in Germany and Europe. TUM educates approximately 25,000 students and employs more than 400 professors and around 5,100 teaching staff.

The TUM Department of Informatics is one of the largest and most well-equipped computer science departments in Germany and has a long tradition of industry collaboration. The "Robotics and Embedded Systems" group in the Department of Informatics is headed by Prof. Alois Knoll. Its primary mission is research and education of machines for perception, cognition, action and control. It is organized into four research areas: 1. Human Robot Interaction and Service Robotics; 2. Medical Robotics, covering all aspects of manipulator and instrument control for complex surgical procedures; 3. Mobile and Cognitive Robotics, encompassing a comprehensive area of topics ranging from sensor models via individual sensor processing entities to high level cognitive skills for navigation, adaptation, and machine learning; 4. Embedded Systems, which are being developed with special emphasis on fault tolerance and high availability.

Our involvement in SMART-E: 

Three Early Stage Researchers are based at TUM:
- Andrea Giusti (ESR6): New control methods for musculoskeletal-based robot manipulators
- Aaron Pereira (ESR9): Human-Robot co-working through turn-taking models
- Esra Icer (ESR10): Modular and bionic-inspired light-weight robot

Additionally, TUM is responsible for the Quality Management within SMART-E.

Prof. Matthias Althoff

Matthias Althoff received the diploma in Mechatronics and Information Technology from the department of mechanical engineering at the Technische Universität München, Germany, in 2005. He received his PhD degree (summa cum laude) in electrical engineering from the same university under the supervision of Univ.-Prof. Dr.-Ing./Univ. Tokio Martin Buss in 2010. From 2010 - 2012 he was a postdoctoral researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, USA, with a joint appointment in electrical engineering and the Robotics Institute. He joined the computer science department at Ilmenau University of Technology, Germany, in 2012 as assistant professor for automation systems. Since 2013 Matthias Althoff is assistant professor in computer science at the Technische Universität München. His research interests include the design and analysis of cyber-physical systems, formal verification of continuous and hybrid systems, reachability analysis, planning algorithms, robust and fault-tolerant control. Main applications of his research are automated vehicles, robotics, power systems, and analog and mixed-signal circuits.

Quality Management

Marie-Luise Neitz

Marie-Luise Neitz graduated with a diploma in languages from University of Saarbrücken in 1991 and in management from the Fernuniversität Hagen (extra-occupational distance studies) in 2006. In addition to this, she is a certified manager in Public Relations and Quality Management. Her long-standing experience as Project Manager in industry and her background in economics as well as international sales management will be beneficial for the industrial cooperations within SMART-E.



Laura Voss

Laura Voss graduated from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in 2010 with a Diplom in organizational and neuro-cognitive Psychology. She is a research assistant at the Department of Robotics and Embedded Systems at TUM, where she is involved in the project management and quality management of several European-funded research projects. Laura is also a PhD student at the Chair of Sociology of Science (Prof. Sabine Maasen) and the Munich Center for Technology in Society (MCTS).
